GKCASN Secretary and Lee's Summit school nurse Cheryl Orr created a fun PowerPoint lesson for her fifth graders about the importance of sinus hygiene and NOT bullying classmates. As you look through, sing to yourself "Hello, fifth grade, my old friends..." :)
School nurses make a difference!
Mary Rhodes, a school nurse with the Grandview School District, was recently called to assist a student who had collapsed. Mary – with the assistance of the high school SRO –successfully used CPR and the school’s AED to save the life of the student, who was in cardiac arrest. The student is now back in school with an implanted defibrillator and doing well!
Every child deserves a school nurse, and Mary's district and students are certainly grateful for their school nurse!
Kansas City Public Schools nurse Juanita Chavez, RN has been busy this year! She has a student who was recently diagnosed with diabetes. In the beginning, his blood glucose levels were extremely labile, and he was hospitalized several times. Through hard work, constant communication with the parents and the student's diabetes clinic team, Nurse Chavez has helped the student and his family learn how to effectively manage his diabetes. His blood glucose levels are stabilizing, and his hospitalizations have decreased significantly. Great job, Juanita! Thank you for all you do!
Do you have pictures of school nurses in action, or helpful tips and tricks? We'd love to share them here and on our social media! Send them to GKCASN VP Amber Wilburn - just be sure there are no photos of students.
